Introduction to Miele Vacuums
Miele is a German manufacturer of home appliances. The family business was founded in 1899 under the leadership of Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkaan. Originally known as the Miele & Cie Company and now officially registered as Miele, the company had humble beginnings producing butter mixers, tub washers and cream separators under the Meteor brand before the brand acquired the name of premium vacuum cleaners.
Vacuum cleaners didn’t become an option until 1927, followed by the first electric dishwasher in 1929 and even a motorcycle in 1930. Apart from the company’s involvement in wartime production during World War II, Miele focused almost entirely on household appliances.
Sticking to the brand slogan “Immer Besser”, which means “always better” in German, Miele continues to focus on developing cutting-edge appliance solutions that make life easier. While the brand is a mid-range appliance manufacturer in Europe, it is promoted as a premium appliance brand in North America. In the United States, Miele is headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey.
This puts it in competition with other premium global brands such as Küppersbusch, Wolf & Cove, Sub-Zero, Gaggenau, Fagor, Dacor, JennAir, Thermador, Asko and Viking Range. It’s worth noting that vacuum cleaners are only a small part of the company’s core competencies.
You can also find Miele competing in the area of kitchen appliances. This includes oven ranges, ventilation hoods, coffee and espresso machines, freestanding and built-in refrigerators and freezers, and dishwashers. The brand also produces washing machines, dryers and ironing equipment.
In the floor care division, Miele manufactures a wide range of vacuum cleaners. However, while it is known for its bagged and bagless canister vacuums, it also makes stick vacuums and robot vacuums that rival the best iRobot vacuums. As of the time of this writing, the brand does not offer any upright vacuums in the United States.
How Miele Vacuums Compare to Other Brands
(Pro 1) Freestanding Cordless Vacuums: It may not seem like a big deal. But anyone who’s ever had to pause their cordless vacuuming duties to grab large items from the floor knows that a freestanding cordless stick vacuum is a huge advantage. Unlike other brands – especially Dyson, their biggest competitor in this field – the Miele Triflex HX1 won’t tip over when you have to pause your cleaning job.
(Cons 1) Miele vacuums are expensive: Unsurprisingly, quality German engineering is not an extra feature offered at a bargain price. Although these vacuums are designed to last for years, you’ll want to invest heavily in canister or cordless vacuums that start at $300 or more.
(Pro 2) Bagged canister vacuums are ideal for allergen control: Anyone with allergies to dust, pet hair, dander or pollen will love that Miele’s bags are made of self-closing fabric. This ensures that allergens stay in the vacuum. These bags are designed to hold up to four quarts of material. Also, note that their bagless vacuum jar alternatives also feature a no-touch emptying mechanism. That said, you’ll find similar features in our Bissell Cleanview Vertical Bagless 2252 review.
(Con #2) Replacement accessories can be difficult: A common complaint with all Miele vacuums is that replacing accessories (such as crevice or trim tools) to handle specific cleaning tasks can be frustrating, similar to what you see with Bissell canister vacuums. While this may not be a serious issue, it is still a sore point for those who must change nozzle attachments frequently during regular vacuuming.
(Pro 3) Long cordless battery life: Cordless vacuums are convenient. However, if you extend your vacuuming efforts, it may be necessary to stop and let the vacuum cleaner battery recharge. Miele cordless vacuum cleaners have a long battery life. The three cordless models can run for 60 to 120 minutes on a full charge.
(Disadvantage 3) Robot vacuums take longer to recharge: For most robot vacuum owners, this may not be a deal breaker because you usually run it when you are not at home. However, if you buy a Miele Scout RX2, be prepared for it to take two and a half hours to fully charge if the battery runs out of juice.
Why You Should Buy a Miele Vacuum
While most vacuums have a fairly long shelf life, if you’re worried about quality work or features that will make your vacuuming job more efficient and easier to accomplish, then Miele should be your first choice. There’s no denying that this brand comes with a matching premium price tag. But with a lifespan that is more than twice that of even their top competitors, the initial investment pays for itself. Even their leading canister vacuums – which have helped build their reputation in floor cleaning – are known for outperforming the competition.
Especially if you have carpets in your home, you can’t go wrong with a Miele vacuum cleaner. In all their floor cleaning equipment models – even shag carpets. In particular, Miele vacuums offer key features such as automatic height adjustment, which allows you to quickly switch between floor types such as hardwood and carpeted floors without having to manually readjust the unit. More importantly, Miele vacuums provide effective control of pet hair, making them competitive with the best Bissell vacuums for this market segment.
Likewise, their cordless and robotic vacuums have longer run times, allowing you to complete cleaning tasks without having to stop for a dead battery. The lightweight design of cordless vacuums means you don’t have to struggle to move around the floor.
At the same time, Miele’s robot class has a low height of 8.4 cm, which means they can easily slide under low clearance furniture. In addition, key aspects such as obstacle detection, Alexa voice control support, fall protection, four intensity steps (speed settings) and two side brushes allow for a more thorough cleaning process.
Of course, their classic product – the canister – is perfect for anyone who wants to clean thoroughly to capture the most common types of dirt and allergens: pet dander, dust, grime and pollen. The self-closing bag ensures that people with allergies or respiratory conditions are less likely to be affected when the bag is changed. Fabric construction ensures that dust particles do not leak back into the environment.
How Long Will Miele Vacuums Last
Most people are used to vacuum cleaners with a service life of about eight years. But Miele shatters that expectation with lab tests and real-world experience proving an average service life of 20 years. This information is all the more relevant given the high cost of purchasing a Miele vacuum cleaner. Yes, they are sometimes twice or three times the cost of a medium vacuum cleaner, but if you can keep it for twenty years, it’s worth it.
That said, as with any other device or product, individual mileage will vary and will depend heavily on user behavior. There’s no denying that Miele’s German engineering means the manufacturer is using quality materials (like motors and components) to build great cleaning machines.
But you still need to do your part to keep your Miele vacuum cleaner working properly. That means you don’t intentionally abuse your vacuum cleaner by, for example, letting it fall from a height or exposing critical parts such as the motor (or batteries for cordless and robotic models) to water. Failure to regularly empty the dust collection drum or replace the dust bag can also affect the life of your vacuum cleaner.
Miele Vacuum Warranty
Not surprisingly, Miele USA (the North American division of Miele) offers a limited warranty on its vacuum cleaners. You will receive a one-year limited warranty from the date of purchase.
Keep in mind that the warranty is optional and to make it valid, you must register your product through the warranty portal on their website. However, for the warranty to be valid, you must purchase your vacuum cleaner directly through the brand or an authorized retailer. Note, however, that you have the option to extend the warranty to five years through their warranty extension program.
